Ep 100: Lee Monks on Alcohol Lies, Marketing & Propaganda
Wednesday Aug 02, 2017
Wednesday Aug 02, 2017
Lee Monks is a writer from Derbyshire, in the UK, and a member of the Strive Community Forum. Lee comes from an extended family to whom drinking is like breathing. He came on the show to talk about the disturbing way that the normality of consuming a potent poison is marketing, in order to keep people like himself an addict. As Lee continues to lead a sober life, he notices the ease by which millions are marshalled by lies and propaganda that suggest drinking is nothing but fun, is normal, is the English way of life, is what all the cool kids are doing at a non-existent 24/7 party, and that to not drink is in some way a betrayal of an admirable national characteristic. Laura Silverman belongs to a group of young American women who are making a big difference in the world of sobriety. They truly are a sobriety collective. After being hospitalised for the second time in 2007, Silverman decided enough was enough and ventured down the sober path so many of us are so frightened to step foot on. A decade later, after battling through anxiety, OCD, and frequent panic attacks, Silverman is a proud sober woman doing all she can to help others find the route back to life through her work at The Sobriety Collective. During this interview we talk about that fateful night in 2007, how she stays sober despite still suffering from anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks, and a whole lot more. Enjoy. Ep 91: Jon Bockman on Culture, Belief Systems, and The Power of Service
Tuesday May 16, 2017
Tuesday May 16, 2017
Welcome to Episode # 91 of The Alcohol & Addiction Podcast, where your host Lee Davy exposes the truth about alcohol so you can make a more informed choice about your drinking. If there are secrets to a sober life, then one of them is learning to serve others less fortunate than you, and my next guest has made it his life's work. Jon Bockman is the Executive Director of the non-profit Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE). Jon has held diverse leadership positions in nonprofit animal advocacy over the past decade. Jon’s career prior to ACE included serving as a director at a shelter and wildlife rehabilitation center, a humane investigator, and a founder of a 501(c)(3) farmed animal advocacy group. Accomplishments during these positions include releasing over 2,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, conducting investigations into dozens of cases of neglected animal care, leading hundreds of outreach events, and implementing international online campaigns to expose factory farm practices to over 25 million Mandarin, Hindi, and Russian-speaking Facebook users. During our conversation, Jon and I talk about his struggles with alcohol, the power behind service, and the invisible, dominant, and violent ideologies that allow us to eat meat and drink alcohol because it is seen to be both normal and pleasurable.
